Let’s face it.
From a technical standpoint, how hard can it be to follow one rule? One command? It couldn’t be that hard, right?
We are brought up in a world full of rules, however, none of those regulations have ever brought any joy to our spirit. Not to say they don’t serve a purpose, because they do. We can agree that all rules have a purpose. If you follow "X" you’ll get "Y", and if you don’t obey "X" then you’ll get "Z".
My point is that not because is a rule means it is beneficial or even significant in your life. For instance, deciding not to steal so you won’t get arrested is a useful rule to maintain order, however, does that rule bring you joy? What if you are a person with a distinct set of morals and values and stealing would never even cross your mind? In that case, is this rule significant or personally life-changing? Probably not yet we still follow them.
Why am I talking about the rules and regulations of this world? I’m trying to point out that we are quick to follow the world’s rules, almost in an autopilot state of mind. On the other hand, when it comes to God and the one law He asked for us to follow, it almost seems like it’s hard work.
Matthew 22:36-37 (NIV)
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
Many would say, yes of course! I do that all the time. But think about your day. Think about how many times in your day you make decisions without bringing God into it? I’m not talking big business decisions or relationship decisions; I’m talking about that split-second decision of whether or not you will smile at the person next to you in the elevator, whether or not you will stop to help that guy on the side of the road on your way to work, whether or not you will stop checking your phone when you are trying to pray or read your devotional. Those are the types of decisions that we need to pay attention to and to ask ourselves what Jesus would have done? How many times throughout the day is your mind preoccupied with duties, chores, plans, people, and situations? How many times do you find yourself stressing, worrying, or complaining over things?
If we are truly loving God with all of our heart, soul, and mind then we wouldn’t take a single breath without praising and thanking Him. If you focus on God and follow this commandment, I can assure you that your life will be so much more joyful, peaceful, and more importantly, purposeful. What a better way to live our lives than to give God our undivided attention? We do it all the time with people we are infatuated with or lusting after, so why are you complaining about making YOUR creator and savior number one in your heart, soul, and mind?
I challenge you to rearrange your day as if you had appointments with God. Talk to Him when you wake up, when you drive, and when you are alone. Call His name when you feel your mind is starting to drift off. Say the words “God, you are first in my life”. Make space for Him who gave you the chance to wake up today, because one thing is certain, nobody will love you as much as He does.
